This How-To assumes you have already successfully setup BellSouth Fast access and you can surf the internet through your Westell modem.

Another version of these instructions is located at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/bellsouth/all#6890.

Turn off the Westell modem's built-in router

The network card in the computer you use to access the modem's controls must be directly connected to the ethernet connection on the modem.

Go to IP address 192.168.1.254

Click on the Expert Mode button

Click on the "Yes, enter expert mode" button.

You do know what you are doing don't you?

Click on the "Configure" button and then click on the "Connection" button.

Change the Protocol setting to "Bridged Ethernet".

Click on the "save and restart connection" button.

Click on the "Home" button.

On the modem home page, in the Local Network section the ethernet status should now read "connected".

Plug in your LAN

Power down the modem and the router before you change the ethernet connections between the modem and the router.

Connect the ethernet port on the modem to the WAN connection on the router.

Connect the newtork card on your PC to any of the numbered ports on your router.

Set up the Linksys router

Go to IP address 192.168.1.1

Set the WAN connection type to PPPoE

Set the User Name and Password to the UserName and Password for your BellSouth Fast Access account.

Select the Keep Alive radio button and set the Keep Alive value to 180 seconds.

The Keep Alive timer is used to maintain the connection 24/7. If the Keep Alive timer is set too low, for example 30, the router can cause a login failure or even a hung PPPoE session. At this point, remove power from the router and modem, wait five minutes, then restore power to the modem. Wait for sync then restore power to the router.

In Keep Alive mode, the router will automatically attempt to connect after initialization. Either from pressing the reset button, a settings change that rebooted the router, or restoring power it will attempt to login.

Click on the "Apply" button.

If your setting changes were successful, you will be returned to this screen.

Click on the Status option in the menubar.

The Login type should be set to PPPoE.

If the status is disconnected, click on the "Connect" button to attempt a connection

When the connection status is "Connected", you are ready to change the internet access settings on your computer.

Change the Network settings on your computer.

Go to Control Panel.

Double click on the Network Icon.

On the Configuration tab highlight the TCP/IP protcol for your Fast Access Connection - i.e. "TCP/IP -> Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Access Etnernet Adapter".

Click on the properties button.

On the IP Address tab, set the option to "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Click on the OK buton to save the change.

Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Surf the net

At this point, if everything has been configured correctly, you shoud be able to surf the web.

Things to Do

Is the Bell South connection manager still autostarting?

Tweak MTU settings?

Use port triggering instead of port forwarding?
